About the Clinic

Welcome to the Halifax/CEO Osteopathic External Student Clinic

The Student clinic provides an opportunity for students to practice under direct supervision of a Graduate DOMP – Manual Osteopath as they take care of you the public and your osteopathic needs.

Currently the student clinic operates on a part time schedule that follows the academic year.

Appointment times are 9:00, 10:30, 1:30, and 3:30.

Appointments are 90 minutes in length to allow for enough time for your assessment and complete treatment to take place.

Outpatient Clinic's Mission

• Help restore normal function and mobility to patients of all ages, potentially influencing all conditions.

• Offer treatments to people with limited resources.

• Provide high quality and practical internships, with expert osteopathic supervision, to help students learn how to treat patients with common injuries and chronic conditions, as well as people presenting complex clinical cases.

 

Educational context

At the Halifax Student Clinic, teachers who are graduate osteopaths act as supervisors through each step of the consultation process.

1. Case history followed by palpatory diagnosis, data amalgamation and determination of priorities for the patient.

2. Definition and application of the treatment plan. 

3. Evaluation of treatment, conclusion and prognosis.

 

• Learning sequences occur over numerous clinical sessions and learning is realized through observation of gradually mastered behaviors.

• At the end of the day and for each treatment provided, students evaluate their performance and are invited to find means to reach the appropriate level of competence. The supervisor is present throughout the entire process.

• This evaluation based on competence requires a mid-internship evaluation for training purposes and a final evaluation at the end of internship to determine whether the required level of competence has been reached.

 

The supervisor contributes to the evaluation, helps in the use of clinical methodology and if required, participates in the treatment. Evaluation is based on ten (10) competencies and acquired knowledge.

 

These evaluations are twofold:

1. A self-evaluation that is compared with that of the supervisor. Once a consensus is reached, the student signs the evaluation sheet.

2. Propositions are made to help the student improve the acquired knowledge.

 

10 Competencies to work on during clinical days:

1. Work ethics and professionalism.

2. High degree of appropriation of Osteopathic philosophy, concepts and methodology. 

3. Adapt one’s professional dealings with patients in accordance with specificity and needs of patients and other professional participants.

4. Prepare a treatment plan based upon a differential osteopathic evaluation and on an appropriate palpatory diagnosis.

5. Proceed with a competent Osteopathic intervention.

6. Take every appropriate action to ensure the patient a professional and safe follow-up.

7. Provide timely information to patients thus allowing optimal taking over of their health care.

8. Help promote Osteopathy in professional and social environments.

9. Contribute to the betterment of services to patients.

10. Show ability and will to self criticize and see to one’s professional development.

 

Outpatient clinic and safety of the public.

• The outpatient clinic’s main objective is training students so they become devoted osteopaths, competent and safe for the public.

• Students learn how to be part of multi-disciplinary teams of health care professionals and refer when needed or in case of an emergency.
